What card shows are actually like in New Jersey

Every card show we have on file in New Jersey, from weeknight hotel shows to three-day convention center weekends.

New Jersey runs more card shows per square mile than anywhere in the country, and the reason is geography. The state sits between two of the largest sports markets in America, so a dealer can work a Sunday in Bergen County for New York collectors and a Sunday in Camden County for Philadelphia collectors without leaving the state.

The thing that surprises people moving here from elsewhere is the weeknight culture. Most states run shows on weekends only. New Jersey has Garden State every Tuesday in Pompton Plains and every Thursday in Secaucus, Morris County on Tuesday nights in Parsippany, and Tri State on Wednesdays at the Mahwah DoubleTree. Weeknight shows are smaller, usually 20 to 40 tables, and they run late, often 3 PM to 9 PM or later. They are the better shows for actually talking to dealers, because nobody is fighting a Saturday crowd.

Admission is low. Most shows are free, and the ones that charge run $2 to $10. Where you do pay more is early entry. Morris County charges $10 to get in at 9 AM and $5 after 10, which is the standard shape statewide: pay double to get the first hour with the dealers before the tables get picked over.

The big rooms are a different event entirely. Collect-a-Con runs 900 tables in Edison. The Dallas Card Show brings 600 tables to the NJ Convention & Expo Center. North Jersey's Morristown Armory show is their largest stop. Those are day trips with parking fees and lines, and they are worth it for selection rather than for prices, since dealers who paid for a convention table price accordingly.

Regionally the state splits three ways. North Jersey shows skew Yankees, Giants and Rangers, with the densest weeknight schedule. Central Jersey along the Route 1 and Route 9 corridor carries the most TCG and Pokemon. South Jersey shows run Phillies and Eagles heavy, and a lot of Philadelphia collectors cross the bridge for them.

Bring cash. Plenty of dealers take Venmo now, but cash still moves a price, and it is the difference between a dealer's asking number and what he will actually take.
