What to know about New York card shops

Card shops across New York with a storefront you can walk into, from Manhattan specialists to upstate vintage counters. Each listing says what the shop carries and whether it buys collections, takes grading submissions or runs trade and play nights, based on what the shop publishes itself.

Manhattan shops are specialists. You'll find PSA-graded Pokemon slabs on the Lower East Side, Magic singles in Greenwich Village, and vintage sports on the Upper East Side, but very few places try to carry everything. Rent decides that. Know what you're hunting before you get on the subway.

Brooklyn and Queens are where the general shops live. Bay Ridge, Park Slope, Nostrand Avenue, Flushing and Forest Hills all have counters that have been open for decades and carry sports, Pokemon and comics under one roof. These are the shops to walk into without a plan.

The Bronx and Staten Island skew toward organized play. Weekly Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece and Pokemon tournaments, and shops built around tables rather than display cases.

Upstate is a different business. Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Schenectady and Binghamton have shops that lean much harder on vintage sports singles and binder digging, several of them open since the 1980s. If you want to go through four million commons looking for something, that's where it is, not in Manhattan.

Hours are the thing that catches people out. A lot of New York shops open at noon or later and close by six, and some of the best ones keep evening-only hours built around league nights. Call ahead.
